Where the Model and Serial Tag Is, Series by Series
On a full-size Sub-Zero built-in the model and serial tag is inside a door, up by the top hinge: the refrigerator door on an over-and-under, the freezer door on a side-by-side, the left door on a French door. Read both numbers to Sub-Zero Repair Redmond on (425) 905-2822 before the visit.

Open the right door
Over-and-under: the refrigerator door. Side-by-side: the freezer door. French door: the left-hand door. A single-door all-refrigerator or all-freezer: its only door.

Look up by the top hinge
The tag is on the cabinet frame just inside the opening, near the top hinge. Sub-Zero gives the same place for its Classic (BI and CL), 600, 500 and 200/300 Series built-ins.

Copy both numbers, and the letters
The model is short, such as 650, 532 or BI-36U. The serial is longer. On 600 Series tags a letter in front of the serial marks the factory: M for Madison, P for Phoenix.

Photograph it if it is hard to read
A phone photo with the flash off usually reads better than squinting at an angle. If the tag is missing or worn blank, the paperwork from the original installation may carry the numbers.
Why the tag comes first
Everything on this site starts from two numbers. The model says which series the unit belongs to, and the series decides what the control can tell you, which codes exist, and which parts belong to it. The serial narrows it further: a 600 Series built before serial number 1810000 has a different control from a later one with the same model number.
What else is on it
Older tags carry more than the two numbers. Sub-Zero’s 600 Series service manual shows a layout with the refrigerant type and charge for each compartment and the total amps, which a technician uses before the sealed system is opened. On a Classic (BI) unit Sub-Zero calls it the rating plate, and the same two numbers are on the registration card that came with it.
When there is no tag
Tags get painted over, peeled off during a kitchen refit, or hidden behind a door that no longer opens fully. The shape of the unit, the kind of control and the width of the opening still narrow it down, and the series pages describe each of those.
