Sub-Zero 690 and 695 With Dispenser

The 690 and 695 are the 48-inch 600 Series side-by-sides that deliver ice and chilled water from a glasswell in the refrigerator door; the 695 is the later of the two. Find the tag inside the freezer door by the upper hinge, then ring Sub-Zero Repair Redmond on (425) 905-2822 and say whether the dispenser, the ice or the cooling is at fault.

Identify it

  • Forty-eight inches wide, two full-height doors, and a recessed glasswell with ICE and WATER keys in the refrigerator door.
  • 690 on the tag for the earlier model, 695 for the later one; the 685 is the same arrangement at 42 inches.
  • A 690 is framed or stainless; a 695 may also be an overlay unit with panels on its doors.
  • On a 695, a BULK ICE key on the main control for filling a container inside the refrigerator.

Where the dispenser lives

The compressors and condenser of the 690 and 695 sit behind the top grille, as on every 600 Series built-in. The dispenser is the one part of the unit that lives in a door: the glasswell, its keys and the valve are in the refrigerator door, and the chilled water tank is mounted inside the refrigerator section.

Dispenser fault or ice fault

The first question on a no-ice call is where the ice stops. On a 695, if BULK ICE drops ice into a container inside the refrigerator but the glasswell gives none, the fault is on the door side. If neither gives ice, the ice maker itself is examined, and ICE flashing with SERVICE points at a fill that timed out rather than at the dispenser.

The glasswell meters ice out in portions of about two seconds per press, so a small handful is normal. Sub-Zero also limits continuous dispensing of ice or water to seven minutes or less; filling large pots at the glasswell can run past it, and BULK ICE is there for quantity.

Water that is warm or slow

After a new supply line or a long shut-off, the water system is purged for three minutes, and the WATER key may need holding for up to 60 seconds while the tank refills. That tank takes several hours to chill, so warm water straight after plumbing work is expected rather than a fault.

Asked on the phone

The glasswell keys do nothing. Is the dispenser broken?
Check the lock first. On the 685 and 695, a red LOCK icon means every glasswell key has been switched off; holding the LIGHT key for about five seconds turns it back on. If the keys still do nothing, call Sub-Zero Repair Redmond on (425) 905-2822.
Is the snap after dispensing a fault?
No. On the 685 and 695 the ice dispenser valve inside the refrigerator door closes with a snap about five seconds after the ICE or WATER key is let go. A snap that never comes, or water dripping afterwards, is worth a call: Sub-Zero Repair Redmond, (425) 905-2822.
