Blank Display, Unit Still Running

A dark or unresponsive display on a Sub-Zero that is still cooling usually points at the control panel, its membrane keys or the ribbon cable to the board, not the refrigeration. First rule out OFF, a switched-off section or Sabbath mode. If the unit has stopped cooling too, call Sub-Zero Repair Redmond on (425) 905-2822.

Check first
  • OFF in the display: the unit has been switched off at its power key.
  • Double dashes on a BI where one section's temperature should be.
  • SAb on a BI display, which is Sabbath mode rather than a fault.
  • The breaker on the refrigerator's circuit, if nothing lights at all.
Needs a technician
  • The membrane switch and ribbon cable tested by the service manual's procedure.
  • The ribbon cable reseated at the control board, or replaced if broken.
  • The control panel assembly or board replaced once the tests point at it.

Dark on purpose

Three states pass for a failed display and are not. Switched off at its power key, a 600 Series or a BI shows OFF and stops running. On a BI over-and-under or side-by-side, one section can be shut down by itself: touch POWER, hold that section’s WARMER, touch POWER again, and double dashes replace its temperature. The same sequence brings it back. And a BI in Sabbath mode reads SAb with its lights off.

Cold cabinet, silent panel

When the cabinet holds temperature but the panel is dark or ignores its keys, Sub-Zero’s service manuals start at the front end: a ribbon cable seated wrongly on the control board or broken, or a membrane switch that has failed. The later 600 manual has a set continuity test for this, done at the cable with a meter before any panel or board is condemned. None of that is an owner step; the cable comes off the board to be tested.

Cold or not

A unit that keeps its temperatures with a blank panel is a display fault. One that is dark and warming is a different job, a power or control problem that has stopped the cooling as well, and the food needs a cold place while it is traced.
